Protein

A building material found in everyday plant and animal foods.

← All nutrition guides

What it is

Protein supplies amino acids used to make and maintain tissues and many working parts of the body, including enzymes.

Why it matters

It supports far more than muscle. Needs vary with age, activity and health, so the same gram target is not appropriate for everyone.

Practical guidelines

  • Include a protein source in your main meals: beans, tofu, eggs, dairy, fish or meat.
  • Look at the whole food, including its fiber, fats and sodium.
  • Use different sources across the week; plant foods can contribute meaningful amounts.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming protein powder is necessary.
  • Focusing on protein while leaving little room for other foods.

Keep it simple

Start by identifying the protein source in the meal you already eat.
