What it is
Calories describe energy. The kcal shown on food labels is the unit used to describe how much energy a food provides.
Why it matters
Your body uses energy at rest and when you move. Over time, the balance between intake and expenditure influences body weight. A calorie count alone does not describe the nutritional value of a meal.
Practical guidelines
- Compare foods using the same amount, such as 100 g.
- Include drinks, sauces and cooking fats when estimating a meal.
- Treat calorie calculators as starting estimates; needs change with activity and other factors.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the values for one serving with the whole package.
- Assuming foods with the same calories provide the same nutrients.
Keep it simple
Use calories to understand quantity. Use food variety to think about quality.
