How to perform

  1. Set the backrest to a modest incline and sit with dumbbells on your thighs.

  2. Bring the weights beside your upper chest as you settle against the bench.

  3. Press the dumbbells upward while keeping your feet planted.

  4. Lower until your upper arms reach a comfortable depth beside your torso.

Key cues

  • Keep ribs from lifting excessively.
  • Press over the upper chest.
  • Use the same range on both sides.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the movement into a very steep shoulder press.
  • Letting one weight drift outward.
  • Forcing the weights below a comfortable range.
